Golf Club de Gap Bayard

Perched at approximately 1,250 meters in the Hautes-Alpes between the northern and southern French Alps, Golf de Gap-Bayard is considered one of France’s most scenic mountain golf courses. Designed by architect Hugues Lambert and opened in 1989, the 18-hole par-72 layout stretches across wide alpine plateaus framed by panoramic views of the Écrins mountains, the Dévoluy massif, and the Durance valley. The course offers a unique “plain-to-mountain” playing style, blending open fairways with rolling terrain, pine forests, wildflower roughs, and constantly changing elevation that makes nearly every hole visually memorable.

What makes Gap-Bayard especially attractive to golfers is its balance between accessibility and strategic challenge. While the fairways are welcoming for mid-handicap and leisure players, the altitude, mountain winds, sloping lies, and precise approach shots create a thoughtful test for experienced golfers as well. The club has a relaxed alpine atmosphere rather than a luxury-resort feel, which many visitors find refreshing and authentic. Facilities include a full driving range, practice greens, on-site lodging, and regional mountain cuisine at the Centre d’Oxygénation overlooking the course. During summer months, golfers often combine a round with hiking, cycling, or exploring the nearby Route Napoléon and Alpine scenery, making Gap-Bayard as much a nature destination as a golf club.
